ALL ABOUT THE TRAIN TRIP

Q: How long is the trip?
A: About 64 miles.
The trip takes approximately 6.5 hours, from 10:00 AM until 4:30 PM
You will stop at Osier, Colorado, for a sumptious, "all you can eat" lunch.

Q: What should I wear?
A: At all times of the year, mountain weather can range from hot and dry to cold and wet.
Remember that the train will take you from about 8,000 feet up to 10,000 feet at Cumbres Pass.
It is best to dress in layers. Long pants are recommended.
Extra sweaters and jackets are recommended.

You will want to bring along sun-screen and sunglasses.

If you ride on the open observation car, you will get dirty. There will be a lot of coal smoke and soot.
Q: Are refreshments available on the train?
A: Yes. There is a concession car with drinks and snacks.
There is also a fine lunch served at the midpoint.

Q: What will I see along the way?
A: The train passes through some of the most beautiful and virutlaly unspoiled country in new Mexico and Colorado.
Please see the picture pages for some views of the scenery.

Q: What kind of cars will we ride in?
A: The cars are replicas of original narrow-gauge coaches.
They are fully enclosed with windows that can be opened.
Several cars have bathrooms.
There is also a car for handicapped access.

Q: What kind of locomotive will pull the train?
A: The locomotives are "ALL STEAM, EVERY DAY".
The locomotives burn coal. On the Cumbres and Toltec, the locomotives are 1925-vintage Baldwin 2-8-2 "Mikados".

Q: What's this about BUSES?
A: For the first part of this season trains are running straight through from Chama to Antonito on Saturday and Tuesday, and from Antonito to Chama on Sunday and Wednesday.

After arrival at either end, the bus will take you back to your point of departure.
If you are departing from Chama on Saturday or Tuesday, the train will take you to Anonito, and you will ride the bus back (about fifty miles, one hour).
If you are departing from Antonito on Sunday or Wednesday, the train will take you to Chama, and you will ride the bus back (about fifty miles, one hour).
If you happen to be in Antonito and the train is departing from Chama on that day, a bus leaves at 8:45 AM to take you to Chama.
